Helping those with dementia
In 2001, Costco member Kevin Jameson’s wife, Ginny, sustained a traumatic brain injury, leading her to develop dementia and lose her ability to care for herself. As her caregiver, Jameson struggled to find information and resources.
“There were organizations for Alzheimer’s and other diseases that cause dementia, but none devoted to dementia, the actual syndrome,” says Jameson, who lives in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
In 2013, he created the all-volunteer, nonprofit Dementia Society of America (DSA; dementiasociety.org). “My vision was a national organization that would give people tools to navigate their lives and [those] they’re caring for,” he explains.
“For me, it was about honoring Ginny’s life and her death [in 2014],” says Jameson. “Ginny always helped people in need, and I think she’d be very proud of what we’re doing.”—Wendy Helfenbaum
