A very good year

Experts discuss the 2019 vintage of Bordeaux wine

by CURTIS ADAMSON

Bordeaux is the most extensive grape-growing and wine-producing area in France and has a rich history that dates to Roman rule. Although Bordeaux has been producing great wine for almost two millennia, each vintage is different because of factors such as temperature fluctuations, crop yields or economic pressures. All pose challenges to each winemaker and test their experience and expertise to produce the best wine possible.

Each year Costco buyers review the latest vintage of Bordeaux wines from various areas within the Bordeaux region. Both red wine and white wines are tasted and carefully evaluated to bring Costco members a fantastic selection.

This fall, the 2019 vintage Bordeaux wines will be arriving in Costco warehouses, along with some older vintages (timing and selection will vary by region). We reached out to two Bordeaux producers to get their thoughts on the 2019 vintage.

A harmonious vintage

“As a vintage, 2019 is probably one of the most balanced and elegant wines that we have produced recently. The ripeness of the fruit combined with the density of the tannins really offers a very harmonious vintage. 2019 is the middle vintage of the trilogy 2018, 2019 and 2020, but it is certainly the most drinkable and approachable vintage of the three. It is easy to drink yet very complex and racy, with a great potential for aging. The blend is super classical for us, representing the perfect expression of our terroir. It is 70% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot.”—Emmanuel Cruse, Château D’Issan

Great weather, great wine

“In the 2019 vintage, Bordeaux experienced fantastic weather conditions for the vines, plenty of rain in the spring, then a hot and dry summer. The clay and limestone soils from the Right Bank were crucial to preserve the freshness and sustain the original style of our wines. As a result, the wines burst with fruitiness, and you can feel the complexity and power. This is a vintage that is already delightful, but that you can also cellar for decades. A great vintage that will make you smile with satisfaction.”—Ronan Laborde, Château Clinet and Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux president
