Virtually possible

Tips to make the most of work-related virtual meetings (or personal video chats)

by MARC SALTZMAN

Some of the new habits many of us were forced to adopt during the pandemic look like they’ll continue, including working from home. Millions of people continue to work from home, either full time or in a hybrid office-home setup, thanks to fast Wi-Fi, lightweight laptops and clear web cameras for video chats.

Regardless of your preferred video-calling platform—Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex Meetings, etc.—virtual meetings are a key part of working from home. Use these tips to improve the experience:

Strong signal. Video calling can be bandwidth intensive, so ensure you’ve got a strong Wi-Fi connection. You may need to work closer to your router, or you can purchase a newer router or even a whole-home mesh system.

Lighten up. Be sure to have good lighting in the room so others can see you clearly. An affordable floor lamp or tabletop light placed behind your computer and pointed toward you will work wonders. (For more info, see “Webcam wonders.”)

Angle is everything. No one wants to see up your nostrils, so angle the camera slightly down instead of up, for a more flattering angle. If need be, place some books under your laptop.

Virtual makeover. If you don’t feel camera-ready, most programs offer touch-up filters to make you look fresher and younger. Check the Settings menu.

Messy room? No worries. All major chatting platforms offer virtual backgrounds—no green screen needed—or simply blur what’s behind you.

Hear and be heard. You can do better than a webcam’s integrated microphone by purchasing a USB mic for your laptop, and a pair of high-quality Bluetooth earbuds will improve the incoming audio on your end. Speak close to the microphone and try to minimize background noise. Zoom and other platforms have noise-suppression options in the Settings menu.

Consider ergonomics. Invest in a good chair with lower-back support, place your monitor straight on (so you’re not turning your head) and also consider an ergonomic mouse and keyboard to reduce health issues.

Take breaks. A final non-gear- related tip: Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away. Also, get some exercise during the day, even if it’s just a walk around the block.

Webcam wonders

Whether you’re investing in a webcam for a laptop or a desktop, consider the following features:

  • Look for a webcam with at least HD quality; some have 4K resolution for even more detail. A few models have a light ring around the lens to illuminate you.
  • A lens cover is ideal for added privacy, since you can close the shutter when you’re not using it.
  • Many webcams have a noise-reduction or noise-canceling mic; video-chat software can help too.—MS
