Element of supplies

Artist Ingrid Dijkers (ingriddijkers.com) has worked in sculpture and collage, and made jewelry, dolls and more. But for the last 12-plus years, she has focused on art journals as a way to incorporate elements of all of her art interests.

Dijkers teaches at art retreats across the country and at her Running Rabbit Studio—a converted barn on 2 acres of land in Byron, Michigan.

One of her favorite supplies is boxboard, and Costco has become a go-to source for this staple. On a trip to Costco for paper towels, Dijkers came face-to-face with boxboard sheets that separate products on pallets. She thought, “Where have you been all my life?” She’s since used it for making journals and more.

For Art's Sake
Artist Ingrid Dijkers uses boxboard rescued from Costco’s recycling bins for journal covers and pages and loves it because the material doesn’t fall apart when used with mixed media, such as wet glue or paint. She can also sew into the pages.
“For what I do, it’s a really versatile surface to work on,” Dijkers says. Plus, she adds, “I’ve always been a firm believer in using what you have on hand.” —SEP
