Tom Hanks Writing is a joyful, if long-term, way to tell a story. No one knows how moviemakers make a movie unless they have spent every day with a moviemaker as the movie is imagined, written, prepped, shot, edited and, you know, made. Combining the two very different disciplines was just as much fun, as each is fraught with the possibility of disaster.

CC What did you most enjoy about writing it?
TH I enjoyed the solitude of writing, the luxury of taking all that time along with the never-ending testing of what I put on the page.

CC What else would you like readers to know?
TH If the readers come away with a sense of the hard work, serendipity, chance, both wonderful accidents and terrible decisions that every movie requires, they will understand that moviemaking is as chancy as is love, war and the restaurant business.—Stacey Wells
