A DAY TO REMEMBER
Enough is enough
February 4 is Rosa Parks Day, an observance to honor the civil rights activist who was born on that day in 1913. Rosa Parks Day promotes equal opportunities, civil rights and fairness across communities in the U.S.
In 1955, Parks was traveling in a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus when the bus driver asked her to vacate her seat for a white man. She refused and was arrested and fined.
Her actions led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted from December 5, 1955, to December 20, 1956, during which time African Americans refused to ride city buses in Montgomery; according to History.com, the mass protest is regarded as the first large-scale U.S. demonstration against segregation. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately ordered the city of Montgomery to integrate its bus system.
