Papyrus stationery focuses on the medium as well as the message
by KATIE COLEMAN
From its beginnings in 1950 as a small, family-run greeting card business to a company with products sold around the world, Papyrus has focused on unique and high-quality paper products with a flair for artistry.
“Throughout our history, we’ve remained true to our passion of creating products inspired by the love of art and fine craftsmanship,” says Diana Ruhl, executive director of creative at Papyrus.
Working with artists from all over the world, the team goes to art shows and scours the internet looking for talent that fits Papyrus’ unique approach. Whether it’s a die-cut image, an embossed detail or elegant gilding, all Papyrus cards have one thing in common: They’re expertly crafted and handmade down to the last detail.
“Our cards have an art-paper quality to them, so you really feel like you’re holding little works of art,” Ruhl says.
Understanding that producing paper products has environmental impacts, the company has taken several steps to minimize and offset the company’s footprint. This includes paper sourcing, use, disposal, recyclability and more. As part of these efforts to enhance their sustainability efforts, American Greetings, the owner of the Papyrus brand, launched a corporate-wide program called Actively Green, featuring goals they plan to achieve by 2025 (see “Actively Green” below).
“As a company dedicated to making the world a more thoughtful and caring place, we recognize the importance of our planet’s limited resources and our role in sustaining them,” says Ruhl.
“All these little details set us apart and show people the magic of what a greeting card can be,” she continues. “Inspiration is everywhere, and we’re excited to share it with the world.”
