A crime hits home

In Kate Morton’s Homecoming, Jess is summoned to her childhood home after her grandmother suffers a fall. Once there she finds a book that chronicles an investigation into a long-ago crime. Within its pages, Jess discovers a connection to her family and the Turner family tragedy that occurred on Christmas Eve, 1959.

Costco Connection What inspired this particular story?
Kate Morton I started writing Homecoming during the first months of the pandemic, when my family and I returned from London to Australia for what we thought would be a short period. As the weeks passed, living near my extended family in the landscape of my childhood, I found myself thinking about home and belonging and especially what it means to come home.

CC What is it about the power of secrets that intrigues you?
KM It is almost certain, I think, that we wish to see and know that which is hidden from us. They are also deeply personal—the thoughts, feelings and actions that a particular individual chooses to conceal. A secret thus tells us a lot about a character: what they value, what they fear and regret, what makes them vulnerable. Put that character inside a family, with all of the closeness, claustrophobia and potential for complication that brings, loosen the lock a little and the secret quickly gains power.—Stacy Wells
