6 Garage Storage Tips for Winter

Be prepared for winter weather. Keep your garage essentials handy with these ideas.

1. Give everything a home

Designate a spot for all winter tools and equipment. Label the shelves so family members return items to their proper places.

Pro-Tip: If you're tight on space, aim high. Hang bikes overhead until spring and shift warm weather gear up and away. While you're at it, move your holiday decorations for easy access.

2. Closet storage

While it may be hoodie weather now, you know what's coming. Drag those heavy coats, snowsuits and boots out of storage and stow them in a more accessible wall unit.

Pro-Tip: Attach hooks to the wall unit's exterior for hanging snow-covered clothing. Shift snow shovels and necessities closer to the garage door.

3. Makeshift mudroom

Slat shelving racks make a great home for snow boots. This allows them to aerate for use the following day. Place a mat below to catch moisture.

4. Garage floor protection

Lay down sturdy, absorbent mats to catch the wet and muddy snow on your tires that contains damaging deicers from the road.

Pro-Tip: Clean the mats by spraying them down with a hose on warmer winter days. The mats will collect floor dust, so they should be cleaned every month.

5. Keep tools stored right

Avoid rusty tools by keeping them dry and properly stored in a toolbox.

Pro-Tip: Store stray screws, nuts and bolts in a spice rack.

6. Generate your own heat

In case the weather turns ferocious, have the right equipment. Store batteries and flashlights in both the garage and the home.
