6 Tips for Studio Apartment Dwellers

We don't need to tell you that studio apartment life can be, well, cozy. But that doesn't mean it can't be remarkably comfortable – and convenient, too.

Look to Costco.com for a number of products that can be used in ingenious ways to get more bang for your square-footage buck.

1. Build a partition using a vertical bookcase

A tall bookcase can do double duty as a room divider, supplying a private enclosure for a bed while creating additional storage space.

Pro-Tip: If your closet has reached maximum capacity, consider storing loose items, such as shoes and handbags, in the separate compartments of the bookcase.

2. Get yourself an island

Not only does a compact kitchen island come complete with a handful of compartments, but free surface space can be used for more extensive food prep or to support a pop-up workstation.

Pro-Tip: Pair an arts and crafts station with a set of stools for a space-saving, work-oriented island that offers ample legroom and fully functional drawers.

3. Invest in kitchen supplies you don't mind looking at

Counteract slim storage space by opting for kitchen basics that are decorative, color-coordinated or sold in sets so that when visible, they're likewise "on display."

Pro-Tip: A whitewashed kitchen will feed (no pun intended) into a stronger sense of openness. Common kitchen items, such as a teapot, can be used as accent pieces to add a pop of color.

4. Let there be light

Natural lighting does wonders to really open up a room. Flood your studio apartment with light by fitting windows with sheer drapes or fully retractable vertical blinds.

Pro-Tip: Really digging your drapes? Use them as a simple alternative to closet doors that extend outward and you'll reclaim some of that precious studio space.

5. Use an armoire as a hideaway home "office"

Fit an armoire with a sliding keyboard platform for a workstation complete with storage space, a computer nook and corkboard-friendly surfaces you can literally "close the doors" on after hours.

Pro-Tip: If you frequently attend virtual meetings, be aware of the backdrop that appears behind you – you don't want to be airing any dirty laundry. Especially if it's actually your dirty laundry.

6. Define your layout

Small floor rugs establish separate "zones" to help break up your space. Arrange furniture, lighting and décor in clusters that cater to different activities, such as entertainment or leisure.

Pro-Tip: Think about traffic flow when arranging your furniture. Create a detour-free pathway from the front door to the living area for guests, and from the bedroom to the kitchen for yourself.
