5 Smart Items to Pack for Your Next Cruise

Taking the road less traveled does indeed make all the difference, but rookies and pros alike can benefit from loading up on outdoor essentials before hitting the open trail.

These four Costco items are essential and engaging to have on hand when straying from the beaten path.

1. Bring the power

Outlets can be a rare and precious thing, especially when traveling in a pack. Avoid having to take turns at a charging or hair-drying station by packing a power strip or portable power bank.

Pro-Tip: Speaking of “plugging in,” toss a nightlight into your bag. Then you can safely find your way to the restroom without flooding the room with light.

2. Check a corkscrew

Some ships will allow you to bring one or two bottles onboard - but few supply your cabin with a corkscrew. Just make sure you pack it in your checked bag.

Pro-Tip: Everyday items can be expensive to purchase onboard. Remember to pack toothpaste, contact solution, pain reliever and other items you're likely to need.

3. Carry on with a carry-on

It could be hours before checked luggage finds its way to your cabin. Fill a carry-on with everything you need to dive right into the cruise life, such as a bathing suit and sunscreen.

Pro-Tip: Equally handy? Pack a lightweight beach bag, which you can use to carry your book, sunscreen and other items from your cabin to the pool. Or, use it when you go ashore to tote a towel, flip flops or other necessities.

4. Supplement your closet

Slip a few clothing hangers into your bag, especially if you're in for the long haul. Most cruise lines provide fewer than 10. Unless you're an ultra-light packer, you may need more.

Pro-Tip: To keep your clothes smelling as fresh as they look, line your luggage with a few scented dryer sheets.

5. Pack some peace of mind

It's not a vacation unless it's worry-free. Load important travel information, such as a copy of your passport, onto a thumb drive. Or, save to your email in the event you lose your documents.

Pro-Tip: While we're on the topic of forms, you can expect a few - and even fewer pens. Keep one handy, especially coming on or off the ship, to avoid playing the waiting game with fellow passengers.
