In-Flight Packing Checklist

Whether you're flying for business or pleasure, you'll want to fill your carry on wisely.

1. Pick the right carry-on

Invest in a carry-on that complements your travel style. If you prefer ease, opt for wheels. Toting electronics? Look for a durable, all-weather exterior, such as a hard shell.

Pro-Tip: Not all airlines have the same sizing requirements, so keep a more compact, alternative carry-on at the ready. Always check the airline's online information to stay on the safe side.

2. Stow layers to prep for all temps

Plane rides can be frigid. Ready yourself for a range of temperatures by packing a sweater or jacket. For the kids, pack blankets from home so they'll have a familiar piece for comfort.

Pro-Tip: When traveling with younger children, bring an extra set of clean clothes and baby wipes for unforeseen messes in the air.

3. Pack snacks (and even meals)

Food isn't always served in-flight. Pack snacks that travel well, like granola bars , trail mix, apples with cheese or nut butter, and dried fruits.

Pro-Tip: Consider packing heartier "just add water" foods in travel-friendly containers, such as oatmeal, instant soups, even premixed pastas. Just ask a flight attendant for hot water.

4. Carry your headphones

Come prepared with comfortable, noise-cancelling headphones and hear only the sounds you choose.

Pro-Tip: Your seatmate will thank for your foresight – good over-ear headphones keep noise in, too. Just remember to charge them pre-flight if they're Bluetooth.

5. Bring your own in-flight entertainment

Carry iPad minis, tablets or e-readers for access to books, movies or work materials. Having these items with you also can help prevent possible damage due to the rough handling of luggage below.

Pro-Tip: Many in-flight armrests now double as charging stations – be sure to pack chargers in your carry-on.
