History:
Chateau Troplong Mondot is a prestigious wine estate located in the Saint-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux, France. It is ranked as a Premier Grand Cru Classé B, meaning it is one of the best wines of the region. In the 17th century, the vineyard belonged to the Abbot Raymond de Sèze, who built the château. The Sèze family was one of the most prestigious of the Bordeaux area's landed gentry. It was particularly illustrious in providing Louis XVI with his personal lawyer. In 1850, Raymond Troplong took over Mondot and turned it into the 33-hectares estate. Edouard Troplong, his nephew and successor, added the name Troplong to the estate before he sold it. Alexandre Valette, a Parisian vintner, bought the estate. In 1980 Alexandre’s great granddaughter, Christine, took over the estate and was joined, 10 years later, by her husband, Xavier Pariente. Together they continued to improve and embellish the vineyard, cellar and château.

The terroir consists of thick limestone under a layer of dense clay, plus abundant underground water combining to give the old Troplong Mondot vines (35 years old on average, the oldest were planted some 90 years ago) the fertility only the grands crus can claim. This limestone clay soil, typical of the hillside vintages of SaintEmilion, is rich in sedimentary fragments of flint and limestone. The wine owes its splendid color and superb concentration to this unique feature of our geology.

“The 2005 Troplong Mondot is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. It was emotional tasting this wine, thinking of the late Christine Valette, who made this compelling wine while battling with considerable courage against an insidious disease. It is a great effort and a superstar of the vintage. Dense purple, it offers notes of white chocolate, blackberry, cassis and licorice as well as a hint of truffle and some subtle background oak. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and spectacularly pure and rich, it is a tour de force, and a great tribute to an incredible woman. Remarkably youthful, this wine probably needs another 4-8 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20 or more years. Kudos to the late Christine Valette!” - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
